Two Coats You Should Never Get Rid Of

Here at Comes with Baggage we are ALL about the edit! As many of you know we finance our little bag line by selling everything that isn’t nailed down on eBay!  But something we’ve all suffered from: Edit Regret!  Tossed aside clothes, and later realized you ditched something you shouldn’t have. Ugh! Hate that feeling.

So consider this somewhat of a Public Service Announcement from your friends at Comes with Baggage.

It’s been freeze your ta-ta’s off cold in New York City as of late, and that means we’ve been doing lots of layering. Lots!

As they layers have piled on, it’s once again reminded us of two coats you should never get rid of. Both are great for layering, and as we’re about to show you, they stand the test of time.

Looking Cool While Staying Warm

This winter season has been one for the books; it’s been bitterly cold. Which poses the dilemma for almost every fashionista: the daily struggle of looking chic or staying warm. Well, here at Comes with Baggage we say,  “Why can’t you have both?” We believe you can.

Here are some tips to stay warm while looking totally cool!

The first staple in any closet for winter should be a long peacoat. We love how Miranda Kerr pairs her classic peacoat with over-the-knee boots for an updated look.

Miranda Kerr

For a little bit more of a dressy feel, a long peacoat may be exactly what your wardrobe needs. Go with a traditional black, grey or brown OR try a red, deep green, blue, or bright yellow to bring a pop of color to those dreary winter days! Check out Kristin Chenoweth and Olivia Palermo rocking matching yellow peacoat’s below and Taylor Swift in a red military coat.

And the great thing about peacoats is that they come in a ton of different price points!

Awesome Layering Tips!

Layers are key for staying warm in the winter and if you choose the right ones, you wont feel like a bulky abominable snowman all day long. Start off with a nude cami under your blouse or sweater. This will give you an extra layer that won’t be noticeable but will keep you toasty. Try sweaters that are a bit more form fitting, it will cut the bulk and keep your body heat in. Also, try a silk button down under your sweater or cardigan. The silk looks sleek and fashionable while keeping in the heat!

layering

Re-use your summer wardrobe. Just because the seasons change, doesn’t mean that your entire wardrobe has to change with it. Take your favorite summer dresses and layer them over a form-fitting turtleneck for some warmth. If you’re not into the turtleneck, pair your dresses with opaque tights and boots.

Speaking of tights, we LOVE them. Wear them under dresses or skirts for that extra layer. Opaque tights are a little thicker so they are great for the winter. If it’s extra chilly out, fleece lined tights are a lifesaver. They come in all colors (and even patterns) and look cute and feminine while feeling like you’re wearing sweats! Major win! And lets be honest, you can wear tights with just about anything.

Leather Pants

Leather is sexy and fun.

It may take you a bit of jumping up and down or wiggling to get them on but once you do they will feel almost as hot as they look (but in a good way). Pair them with a cute sweater or blouse and some pumps and you’re set! We love how Miranda Kerr and Gwen Stefani sported their leather pants!

Scarves, Gloves and Hats, oh My!

Ah, the three main accessories for keeping warm in the winter. Scarves are the perfect accessories for cold winter days because not only do they keep you warm, but they also are a great way to add a pop of color to an outfit.

scarf

Let’s not forget about our hands! Gloves are an essential part of staying warm through the cold winter months. We find leather lined gloves to be the warmest and most stylish.  Some of our favorite celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Lucy Liu, Kelly Rutherford and Jessica Simpson make leather gloves a winter wardrobe staple. Let’s also not forget Adele’s epic Vogue cover with her black leather gloves!

Treat your hat like your best friend, because in the bitter cold of winter there is nothing like a beanie to keep you warm and look cool.

Tighten Up

If you’ve had the misfortune of experiencing New York during its frigid winters, you’ve definitely had your fair share of experiences with leggings, leg warmers and tights! Finding the perfect pair of tights is like trying to find a perfect boyfriend—We want smart, funny, in shape, and good looking! Alas we often find the other kind – unreliable, the ones that run, rip, and tear, won’t keep their shape, and let’s not even mention the annoyance of putting them on and taking them off. But you keep coming back because we will settle for almost perfect and looks great at parties. 😉

There are undeniably a number of benefits to wearing tights. They keep us warm, go with almost everything, and make that extra piece of chocolate cake last night a little less noticeable.

My dearest friend would cut off the legs of her tights and wear the top part under her going-out clothes because she felt she was too young to purchase Spanx of any sort. Explaining this to a new boyfriend was an entirely other blog! All girls without a doubt love thinning shape wear, but here at CWB, we value the legs part of tights as much as  the girdle part. With the new year inching closer, it’s time to go through your tights drawer and replace those old, almost perfect pairs with some totally trendy ones that are totally perfect!

CWB’s favorite winter tight trends this year:

Lace

Nothing is sexier than lace tights. They allow you to look hot as hell without looking like a ho-ho-ho because they’re also fashionable. Whether they are fishnet or printed, lace tights go perfectly with any party dress. You could even be bold and dress up your office outfit with this hot, winter trend. But don’t go to short on your skirt or you will look like the office ho-hoh-ho!

Writing and Symbols

Have fun with your hosiery! Anna Wintour might take 2013’s winter tights trend seriously, but you certainly don’t have to. These ‘Wanna Party’ tights are one of our favorites at CWB and will look amazing on New Year’s Eve with a shimmery black dress.  For a fun, weekend day look, try some tights with symbols!

Suspender

Suspender tights are a new trend that a lot of celebrities have been rocking lately. They combine the sexiness of sheer tights with the warm practicality of opaque tights all in a garter detail. Throw on a leather skirt or shorts on but only if you have legs like Miranda Kerr!

Two-Tone

Yeah, awkward & weird at first but Chanel practically invented then reinvented the trend so they are definitely fashionable. You can wear this two-tone tight trend (try saying that ten times fast) to glam up an outfit from all angles. If you want to be really bold, try a pair that are different shades on each leg. Or even an ombre pair! But keep the lines straight or you’ll look like you’ve been spun through a blender!

From our tight-thusiasst to you, You Gotta Fight for your Right to Tight!!

GLAMOUR Women Of The Year Awards – 2013

I’ve always had a strong interest in everything and anything involving fashion. When I heard GLAMOUR Magazine was looking for volunteers for their Woman of the Year event, I just couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by. I jumped at the chance to help out!

I was given the task of hand-delivering invitations to guests for this years Glamour Women Of the Year Awards 2013 at New York City’s iconic Carnegie Hall. The pay-off was well worth it, as I was extended an invitation myself to attend the gala and bear witness to a truly inspiring event.

I spent the day at Flying Television – Talent Booking & Brokering, where I am a fall/winter intern, and even the staff there were excited for me! I brought my dress to their office, did my hair, and then gave them all a quick look-see at my dress (which they all deemed “VERY GLAMOUR MAG”) and dashed to Carnegie Hall! I hit my seat just in time for the show. At 7:30PM the lights dimmed and the program began. Seth Meyers, (Hilarious actor, head writer for Saturday Night Live, and soon to be Late Night Talk Show Host) opened up the show. As expected, he was his usual funny self, stating that every year his Women Of The Year Award is dedicated to his mother, but this year his new bride Alexi Ashe stole the award…it was a close call for him!

The women of the year honorees included Lady Gaga, Gabby Gifford & Mark Kelly, Malala Yousafzai, Catherine Martin, Liya Kebede & Christy Turlington Burns, Natalie Massenet (founder of Net-a-Porter), Carissa Moore, Barbra Streisand, Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis and Melinda Gates. Celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Lily Collins, Andy Cohen, Hilary Clinton, Rose Byrne, and others were on stage to present the awards throughout the evening.

Lady Gaga (The Monster Talent) was awarded a Women of the Year award not just for her musical success but for being a huge insipiration to girls everywhere. Melinda Gates (The Advocate) was awarded with a Women of The Year award due to being one of the most respected philantropists in modern history. She is cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (along with her hubby Bill Gates) and vowed to spend 90% of their fortune on helping those less fortunate around the world. Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly were awarded Couple of The Year. On January 8, 2011, U.S Represantative Gabriell Giffords was shot in the head. Her husband, a retired astronaut (!!!), stood by her side during her recovery as she learned to speak and walk again. Liya Kebede and Christy Turlington Burns (The Role Models) were awarded Women of The Year awards not for being super gorgeous, but for both starting foundations to help and support maternal health care. Being that both of them are mothers, they share the same passion to have all women have safe births. Catherin Marin (The Fashion Wizard) won A WOTY award for being one of the most influential costume designers in moviemaking. She was in charge of all the fabulous outfits we saw in the movie Great Gatsby! Natalie Massenet (The Chairman of Cool), the founder of Net – a – Porter , won a WOTY award for introducing and changing fashion in the online marketplace. She was the first to come up with a web-based way of purchasing designer clothes. Carissa Moore (The Game Changer), received a WOTY award. She is the youngest person ever to win the Women’s World Surfing Championship and the first woman invited to participate in the men’s Triple Crown of Surfing competition. In a male dominating sport, she proves that girls can do anything they put their minds to. Kaitlin Roig-Debellis (The Protector) is a brave teacher that packed 15 1st graders in a tiny bathroom when a gun man was loose at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She was awarded a WOTY award for saving their lives and created the charity Classes 4 Classes, which gives educational gifts to other classrooms in need. Barbara Streisand was given the the Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the first woman to write, direct, produce, and star in her own film (Yentl). Besides having a wonderful voice, she opened a research center for heart disease – “The Barbara Streisand Woman’s Heart Center”.

Glamour1

I found the most moving part of the evening came when 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai took the stage to receive her WOTY fund honoree award and was instantly given a standing ovation. Of the small group of people who will ever receive a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall, she is in my opinion the most deserving.  Malala Yousafzai is known for activism in the Pakistan region of Swat Valley where she advocated for the rights to education for women. She wrote a blog for the BBC detailing her life under the Taliban rule as well as filmed a New York times documentary. As a result of her movements to grow awareness of what was happening in her region, she was shot in the head an neck on her way home from school by the Taliban. She was unconscious, but when she stabilized she was moved to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. The Taliban has still claimed that their intentions are to kill Yousafzai and her father.

For many of us, this incident might have silenced us, but not for Malala Yousafzai. It only made her stronger. She still speaks out about the Taliban and the rights of girls to have equal educational opportunities in her home region. She stated at the Glamour Awards, “I believe the gun has no power”. Lady Gaga was so moved by Malaia that she stated, “if I could, I would forfeit the magazine cover and devote it to Malala instead.”

Glamour2

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Barbara Streisand by Hilary Clinton. Babs stated that “America needs a woman president” (hint-hint).

While exiting the awards show, I was gifted with a swag bag full of Loreal makeup/beauty products and the Glamour magazine with Lady Gaga on the cover.  This night was all about girl power and inspired me to fear nothing and accomplish everything! It was truly a night to remember and ignite inspiration!

We Are Having Major Coat Envy This Fall!

It’s that time of year again … time for COATS!!! The mornings are crisp and now that we have turned the clocks back, darkness creeps upon us earlier and earlier. Fall is one of our favorite times of year here at Comes With Baggage, because we get to start expressing ourselves through multiple layers of fashion. What better way to do so than with a CWB expression clutch and a kick-ass fall overcoat.

We have noticed some of our favorite styles passing us by on the streets of New York City, so we decided to share them with our fellow CWB’ers. I mean, who doesn’t love this season’s “Oversized” look? No matter what the color, oversized coats are sure to make a huge statement. We love to pair ours with dark skinny jeans.

Coat - Oversized

As our clutch says, “White is the new black”…and we could not agree more. There is nothing more chic than a crisp white winter coat. We are always into our winter white’s and rocking them here at the office. Whoever said you cannot wear white pants after labor day was clearly wrong. Here are some of our favorite chic white street styles.

Coat - White Coat- white clutch2

Plaid on! Loving that this season is all about plaid. We love rocking this style and getting more in touch with our preppy side.

Coat - Plaid

Sometimes, the weather does not call for a full on coat ensemble so what do you do? Vests and capes!! They are the perfect addition to any girls’ wardrobe. We are telling you, you will fall in love and wear them over and over.

Coat - Cape

So whether you are embracing your more preppy side or making white your new black…we are sure you’ll look A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

eBay Can Be Your One Way Ticket To A Dream Wedding Day

On April 27th, I married the love of my life in a gorgeous raw silk and tulle confection by Vera Wang.  Today, 6 months later, I sold it on eBay for 1/3 of the retail price.

I always knew I wanted to sell my wedding gown after my wedding. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not a heartless soul, with no sense of sentimental value. I just knew that keeping it wasn’t for me. I come from a family of savers, we have designer items unspoiled in plastic and tissue paper from my grandmother that I cherish, but we also have random tchotchkes (Yiddish for crap!) from who knows where.

In 1975, my grandmother had my mom’s Priscella of Boston wedding gown preserved in an air-sealed bag and tucked it away in her basement, perhaps for a daughter to wear one day. Fast-forward 30+ years and neither my sister nor I wanted to wear the gown. And I doubt one day my daughter (if I have one!) will want to wear mine. Cross off preserving it from the list.

I thought about those ‘trash the dress’ photo-shoots that some brides do post-wedding, where they jump in a lake or roll around in paint while wearing their gown. It just felt wrong to me. Why trash something so beautiful?

I also thought about turning the gown into something else: pillows, a basinet, a duvet cover – did I really want such an expensive piece of bedding?

Then I thought about selling it, giving someone else a chance to love it as much as I did. Every girl should feel like her most beautiful self on her wedding day, and this gown, with its double corset and boning, definitely made me feel that way.  I wanted another girl to share my happiness.

Someone once told me ‘Don’t let your possessions own you, You own them.’ I owned this gorgeous gown, probably the most expensive item I have ever worn, and now I am honored that someone else is going to own it too.

The girl who purchased the gown sent me a note today that she had been hunting for this dress on eBay for over two years because she could never afford the dress at retail. She added after a lot of thanks, that my selling this dress made her dreams of being a beautiful bride come true. I have no doubt that this was the way to go and I encourage everyone to release their gowns into the bridal universe to let another girl’s dream become reality.

PS – Hilary Duff also shared in the Vera Wang Gemma gown love as she wore this dress on her wedding day too!

CWB’s Special Love For #Banksy

It is no secret that Comes With Baggage is directly inspired by artists and often by those that choose Graffiti as their outlet of expression.

One particular artist who has been on our radar since the beginning of time is #Banksy. We almost lost it when we had heard that he had set up a stall in Central Park selling 100% authentic original signed #Banksy canvases for $60!

Street art is as true an art form as any allowing artists to share their creative thoughts and visions with the entire world.

For us personally at CWB, street art is a release from the day to day norms. It enables us to step outside of our mainstream lives and take a pause to question and appreciate the intricate murals on the sides of what would typically be empty, otherwise unnoticed, walls that we walk by everyday.

We have special love for #Banksy. He’s one of the few artists who is able to express his art political and social commentary with a dark sense of humor. Here at CWB, we are all about dark sarcasm….ie: Snarkasm?

#Whatareyoubitcheslookin’at? As Halloween is upon us it is fitting that new rumors crop up about multiple #Banksy’s. I’ve seen at least three on the street today just proving that his art has infiltrated more than just our town, but also the American Zeitgeist.
